This poem is Kauwila Tai’s gift to her beloved aunt, Namaka, on her 75th birthday. The lines are meant to stimulate the senses and memories of a life well lived. Kauwila isn’t a fluent speaker of 1ōlelo Hawai`i, but she has a strong upbringing of Hawaiian values that she passes on to her children and her students. Kauwila Tai grew up in Waimānalo, O’ahu, but now lives near her daughters and grandchildren in Wai`anae. She graduated with an AA degree and certificates in business management. Her goal is to use her skills to work in a Native Hawaiian support program.
